Thirty-five members braved the heat and humidity for the CKCA Drive & Dine to Made from Scratch Restaurant in Wilson, KS on June 22, 2024. Steve and Cindy Nichols led the Hutch contingent up to the McPherson rest area, where we met Darwin & Nadine Henry, organizers of today's Drive & Dine, and Ray & Audrey Wright, who had all driven down from Salina.
After some tire-kicking and a quick pit stop, Darwin proceeded to lead our group of Corvettes to Wilson.....the long-g-g-g-g way! Denise and I were astounded to discover that there are actually curves and corners in this part of the world, as one approaches Falun, KS from the south. (I fantasized briefly about making a u-turn in Falun and spending the rest of the afternoon howling around the only consecutive curves we've seen around here besides the two up by Medora...)
Darwin had called ahead to some friends of theirs in Falun, and so it was a special treat to see several vehicles parked on the side of the road waving to us as we rolled through town! Denise snapped a quick pic of a fellow and his dog sitting on a porch, and he let out a hearty laugh when he noticed that she was taking his picture. :)
The closer we got to Wilson, the more character the land seemed to possess, with actual hills to ascend and descend. (I guess you can tell that we're still going through some significant Blue Ridge Mountains withdrawals...)
The good folks at Made from Scratch Restaurant were ready for us. Everyone working there was cheerful, and I don't think anyone in our group went away hungry (right, John?). After lunch (and some fresh home-grown sweet onions from Marilyn & Galen Seehafer - thank you!), many of us made the short drive up to Kansas Originals Market & Gallery, where Ray Wright put a serious dent in their inventory of bottled wine. Just kidding, Ray! (But we did have to help you carry it all out! ;)
As I think I've mentioned elsewhere, it's been over 40 years since I belonged to a Corvette club (Glass Odyssey Corvette Club – Kitsap County, Washington), but I've never forgotten how much fun it is to spend a day on the road, in the wind, with great people, in great country, in America's Greatest Sports Car.
Many thanks to Steve & Cindy Nichols for expertly guiding us out of Hutch, and Darwin & Nadine Henry for knocking it out of the park planning today's drive, and all y'all in the CKCA for making us newbies feel so welcome!
