January 2014

32 CKCA members (21 Corvettes) enjoyed Saturdays Drive & Dine. We were blessed with great January weather. We traveled over 100 miles on the back-roads through Buhler, Haven, Cheney Lake State Park and back to Hutchinson. The staff at Playa Azul reserved space for our group and quickly served great food and cold beverages… including mouth-watering margaritas. An enjoyable time was had by all.

Gypsum
Darwin & Nadine Henry, Salina, hosted the April 19th Drive & Dine to Gypsum. Darwin submitted the following article that recently appeared in the Lindsborg, Gypsum and Assaria Newspaper:
“Saturday evening the 19th, somewhere between 11 and 15 Corvettes were lined up on ‘Main’ in Gypsum. The Central Kansas Corvette Assn. had supper at Big D’s. Each month, the club, which is based in Hutchinson, has a ‘Drive & Dine’, with one member or spouse choosing a town and restaurant. Members Darwin Henry and wife Nadine were the “choosers’ for April. Members are from Salina, Hesston, Hutchinson, Stafford, McPherson, and Wichita (although Wichita was not represented that night). The Corvettes were from 1968 or ’69 to 2014.”
30 CKCA members participated in the Drive & Dine to ‘Big D’s House of BBQ’ in Gypsum. The caravan arrived at 5:00 pm and departed around 6:20 pm. Participants said the food and service was outstanding and the owner was thrilled to serve our group and invited us back for a future outing. A special thanks to Darwin and Nadine Henry for organizing and hosting the event and to Debby Gruver for her assistance with taking RSVP’s from CKCA members and communicating with the Henry’s.
Also a special thank you to Marcia Strawder for providing the photos; I received the photos with the following message from Wayne & Marcia Strawder:
“Thank you Darwin and Nadine for the fun drive to Gypsum. Sorry we didn’t get a photo of you wearing the white Mickey Mouse gloves, waving us farewell at the correct exit.”

Grumpy's March 2014
Over 40 CKCA members (20 'Vettes) and 4 guests enjoyed Saturdays Drive & Dine to Grumpy's Steakhouse in Kingman. We were welcomed at the door by 'old' Grumpy and yes, he was 'grumpy'. Seriously, Grumpy was a great guy (former chef at Larned Country Club) and the food and service was outstanding.
Sincere apologies to a few couples who were still paying when the group photo was taken. A special thank you to Wayne and Marcia Strawder for
organizing and hosting the event. Their 'thank you' message is copied below:

"Thank you all for joining us on the Drive and Dine to Grumpy's Steakhouse
and Bar in Kingman. We enjoyed our food, drink and conversation, hope you
did too. We appreciated that most responded promptly to our sign-up list.
That let us make successful plans with Grumpy's, allowing them to arrange
for more supplies and extra wait help. It was great to support a true Mom
and Pop business in Smalltown Kansas. We will be adding Grumpy's to our
personal list of Corvette runs and hope you will, too.

Jose Pepper's
22 CKCA members (12 Corvettes) participated in Saturdays Drive & Dine to Jose Pepper’s in east Wichita. As predicted, it was a great day to drive with the windows down, t-tops removed and convertible tops down. The caravan traveled on back-roads that most of us never knew existed. Everyone was able to experience the famous “Furley Quarter Mile” followed by a quick tour of Furley. Thank the good Lord and Henry Ford (actually Louis Renault in 1920; but that doesn’t rhyme) for working brakes. As Valerie Williams said, “the tour of Furley is another ‘check’ off my bucket list”.
A special thank you to Jose Peppers’ general manager Mike Crane. Mike and his staff were ready for the group and provided outstanding customer service and a great meal. We’ll be back!

Alden
Nearly 50 members (23 Corvettes) participated in the caravan to Alden (Sterling/Lyons area) on Saturday. Special thanks to Jack and Lora Martin for hosting and planning the event.
“Thank you Jack and Lora for the fun drive and the good food at Alden on Saturday. We didn’t mind the extra wait for our meal, we just enjoyed our strawberry pie as our appetizer – yum!”

Stafford/St. John
43 CKCA members, 5 guests (25 Corvettes) participated in Saturdays Drive & Dine to Stafford/St. John. The caravan first traveled to Stafford where we were met on highway 50 by CKCA member Byron McNickle and later in Stafford by our newest CKCA members, Steve & Velda Young (Welcome!). We received a ‘Stafford Police’ escort and parked along the ‘main drag’ for a series of ‘group photos’ by David Green owner of the Stafford Courier. David will be doing a feature story on CKCA. Several locals also enjoyed seeing and taking photos of the Corvette caravan.
We departed Stafford and headed a few miles west to the beautiful home/farm of Dennis & Ruth Teichman. We toured the Teichman’s ‘MAN SHED’ (sorry ladies) filled with collector vehicles and memorabilia. We then headed to their back porch and enjoyed cocktails and snacks. Robin Austin (local friend of the Teichman’s) brought over his ‘freshly’ restored 1962 Corvette for everyone to envy. We took a group photo around the ’62 and then departed for St. John; we arrived around 5:40 for a quick tour around the ‘St. John Square’ and then enjoyed a great meal at Squeaks.
It was a great afternoon and evening and the Teichman’s were wonderful hosts. Thanks again to the Teichman’s and their son Mark for his assistance in hosting our club; and an additional thanks to Bill & Marj Westfahl for their assistance with the organization of the outing.

Cy's Hoof -n- Horn
Forty-four members and one guest attended Saturdays Drive & Dine. Eleven Corvettes (our ‘brave’ members) and a conglomeration of other vehicles (cars, pickups and SUV’s) traveled in a ‘fog’ to Cy’s Hoof & Horn in Sedgwick. We arrived at Cy’s and entered the steak house through a ‘cattle chute’ (moo) and were welcomed by Cy’s friendly staff. The service was excellent and members ‘raved’ about the delicious food and the generous portions. One member commented that the ‘chicken fried steak’ reminded him of *“The Old ‘96er” in a scene from the “The Great Outdoors” with John Candy and Dan Aykroyd.

Seelyle Mansion
Our trip to Abilene to Seelyle Mansion. There were 5 from CKCA and 17 from KC Club. All had a great time. The Mansion was decorated to the 9's with over 80 Christmas trees and don’t know how many flowers. We had the Mansion to ourselves and were able to look to our hearts content. Some even retired to the basement to bowl on the alley they had bought at the 1905 Worlds Fair! Appetizers were served in the dining room on original china and we had our fill, especially after eating at Brookville earlier. The Mansion owner Terry played Christmas carols (on an original early 1900’s Steinway) and all sang along. Mike the tour guide gave us a history lesson of the Mansion and early Kansas and answered questions which were plenty. Was a good trip and our club was invited back if others would like to see.
