20th Anniversary Black Kettle Car Show – Moundridge, KS
• June 1, 2024 •
Denise and I made an unusually-misty-early-morning drive up to Moundridge, Kansas on June 1st, 2024 to take in the 20th Anniversary Black Kettle Car Show. Great event and venue, our first time there.
We found a spot under the branches of the perfect tree, then proceeded to get dripped on profusely because of the mist collecting on and falling off the branches, almost as if it were actually raining. Shortly after drying our car for the second time, we drove up to the north end of town to participate in the annual Black Kettle Festival Parade, which began staging on Redbud Street in the Wollman Addition at 9 and started rolling at 10.
The parade route took us south on Christian Avenue, right through the heart of downtown Moundridge. Great fun, but only two cars participated – our Corvette, and a '59 Chev Bel Air. Old farm tractors (lol!) seemed to outnumber everything else.
Hundreds of townsfolk lined the parade route. It was particularly heartwarming to roll past Moundridge Manor and see so many residents gathered outside together in the fresh country air, taking in the spectacle. Many parade participants were tossing out candy for eager kids lined up along both sides of the route. We're not crazy about this tradition, honestly, but the kids were sure digging it! By the time we got back to the showgrounds the mist was abating and "our" tree finally stopped dripping on us.
We mingled and met a lot of great people, including Lloyd & Jerry Wood from Salina (2017 Corvette Grand Sport Coupe with Lambo doors!), Jon Stucky from Moundridge (2004 Cheetah trike, featuring a built 327 Chev small block and 700R4 trans!), Jim Bontrager from McPherson (1962 Corvette Roadster; Jim is kin of passed CKCA members Dean and Clarence Bontrager) and Lance Given from Wichita (2000 Corvette Roadster, a.k.a. "Yvette," which won a "Best in Class" trophy) and saw a lot of great cars and motorcycles (188 was the official tally).
Kudos to Jeremy & Ginger Smith (happy birthday, Ginger!) and all your hard-working volunteers for putting on such a quality event. We had a blast!
