News from members Darwin & Nadine
August 2014

"The Caravan, Museum and Guided tours are great! On the drive to Columbia, we had rain plus an obstacle course of rolling tires (two tires fell off a pickup and rolled along the highway); think quick and dodge!! Had rain last evening (Thursday) in Bowling Green. Wish we could send the rain to Kansas."  - Darwin & Nadine

P.S. You can even buy dirt from the NCM sinkhole at the gift shop.

Jack Martin showed a video at a CKCA meeting of him participating in the Sandhill Open Road Challenge in Arnold, NE. A large crowd stayed around and watched Jack maneuver through the winding Sandhills of Nebraska at 100mph+.

Congratulations also to Larry Parsons for taking home a trophy at the ‘Route 77’ Classic Car Show in Burns; Larry and his C-6 received a ‘Top Fifteen Overall’ award (see attached photo). Larry will soon need another trophy case to house his trophies and awards.

CKCA members participated in the ‘Route 77’ Classic Car Show in Burns, Kansas helping promote the October Hutchinson Rod Run & Classic Car Show. I understand that Debby Gruver’s C-5 received first place in the 1981-2000 corvette division and the 1976 Rod Run & Classic Car Show ‘Give-Away’ Corvette received first place in the 1953-1980 division. Congratulations to both winners!

JT Crank (son of Rich & Kathy Crank) received an award from the Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run. JT’s miniature C-7 Stingray was the first C-7 in Hutchinson and he displayed it next to his family’s ’89 Coupe at the 2013 Rod Run. The C-7 trophy was presented to JT by Rod Run President Jim Gruver.

Congratulations to CKCA member Steve Heter from Hesston. Steve won first place in the C-5 Division at the May 10 ACCC Best Western All Corvette Show and Shine in Wichita. Thanks to Dennis Nicklin for providing the attached show photos.

Photos submitted by CKCA member Mike Lewis. Mike drove his 1980 corvette at Kansas Speedway on July 12th. Mike said, “I was able to drive on the track for a total of about 5-½ laps getting up to a little over 100 mph in short bursts.” Mike’s father Gene passed away on October 13, 2013. He was an avid corvette enthusiast and ‘race’ fan. Mike honored his father by spreading some of Gene’s ashes on turn #4. Mike inherited the 1980 corvette from his father and recently completed a minor restoration project and added the ‘blue flames’; Jarrod Gruver (son of Jim & Debby Gruver) painted the blue flames.
