Kansas Honor Flight is celebrating a huge milestone
by: Ryan Newton, Sep 6, 2024
by: Ryan Newton, Sep 6, 2024
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Kansas Honor Flight will celebrate a huge milestone next week. The 100th flight will take veterans to Washington, D.C., on Monday and return on Wednesday afternoon.
“Since then, we have taken 4,104 veterans on the flight,” said Pat Leon, Kansas Honor Flight volunteer. “It is completely free to the veteran if they are Kansas, World War II, Korea, or Vietnam.”
The volunteers for Kansas Honor Flight say the trip often provides closure for the veterans.
“We have had wives send us messages afterwards saying literally, my husband came back a different man. Especially from the Vietnam Era because there is this healing and closure that they get being there with the other veterans and being there to share stories and experiences that can be very helpful to them,” Leon said.

Kansas veterans return from 100th Kansas Honor Flight
by: Aditi Lamba, Sep 11, 2024
by: Aditi Lamba, Sep 11, 2024
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – One hundred Kansas veterans celebrated a historic trip and returned to Wichita on the 100th Kansas Honor Flight after visiting memorials in Washington, D.C.
Organizers say the honor flights are about service and gratitude, and honoring the legacies of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Several veterans called it a powerful journey, paying tribute to fallen heroes.
For the last decade, the Kansas Honor Flight has been honoring veterans by taking them to the World War II, Korean and Vietnam war memorials. Many of these veterans shared that this is the first time they have seen the tributes in Washington, D.C. It is a program that has taken more than three thousand veterans there for free.

"We won a cool mailbox custom-painted and pinstriped by Shane Arpin-Zimmerman in one of the raffle drawings at the Mt. Hope Prairie Pride Car Show yesterday, August 17, 2024. Denise told me just before the drawing that if I won, I had to act like someone who's name had just been called on 'The Price is Right,' so when they called my ticket number I whooped and hollered and jumped up and down like I'd just won a million dollars! I made such a ruckus, even Roscoe P. the dog (visible in the pic on the right) started barking! Good times!"

Meet new CKCA member Curtis Nightingale!
NOTE: Click on photos for larger version
I first photographed Curtis Nightingale's gorgeous 1998 Torch Red C5 Corvette Coupe as he drove past the 15th Annual E Street Reunion Car Show, which took place on August 2, 2024 at Gray's Barbershop on South Main in Hutch. I was working the late afternoon lighting with my cell phone when Curtis drove past, wondering what the hubbub was all about. He pulled over, we had a great visit while I posed him for a few more photos, and he and his wife Michele subsequently joined the CKCA the following day at our 'Downtown Hutch Cars & Coffee at DCI Park' event. Thanks Curtis & Michele, welcome to the chaos!

Jim Bontrager and his beautiful '62 Roadster at the Black Kettle Car Show in Moundridge, KS – June 1, 2024
We met Jim Bontrager at the Black Kettle Car Show in Moundridge, KS on June 1, 2024. Jim drives this beautiful '62 Corvette Roadster, and is kin to Dean Bontrager and Clarence "Clay" Bontrager, two well-known and respected CKCA members who are sadly no longer with us. Jim told us some colorful stories about Clay, who was famous back in the day for his autocrossing and drag racing prowess with his 'Vette, affectionately known by all as "Sting Rat." Thanks for the visit, Jim. Looking forward to hearing more stories!

Who's in the car?
We're looking for help identifying the couple sitting in the car in this vintage photo, which was loaned to the club by CKCA member Jim Bechler at the membership meeting on Monday, April 8th, 2024.
The other folks in the photo are, from left to right: Duane and Karen Ukens, Fred Johnson (kneeling), Wes Heinlein (standing next to driver door), Jim Bechler, Clark Miller, Rick and Bev Smiley, and Doug Rice (in wheelchair).
Fun fact: There are seven former CKCA presidents seen in this pic!
I'm told the photo was taken in the Sunflower Bldg. at the Kansas State Fairgrounds, circa 1992-1993.
Any additional information regarding this photo is appreciated. A zoomable version of this photo can be found on the CKCA Facebook page HERE.
