On Saturday, June 1st, 2024, Three Rings Brewery in McPherson, KS held what they called the Corvette Drive-In event. Denise and I first heard about this event from Jen, the taproom manager, during a visit up there in mid April, and with Jen's blessings we had originally planned on promoting the drive-in as a CKCA Drive & Dine event.
However, it wasn't until late May that Jen confirmed they would actually have a food truck on site for that day (I think most of the local food trucks in the area were already committed to the Black Kettle Car Show in Moundridge), so although we did list the event on our Upcoming Events page, we didn't promote it as an "official" CKCA event or Drive & Dine. Former CKCA member Mike Lewis, whom Jen had originally spoken with in early April regarding this event, had sent out an email on May 1st advising of a meet-up and departure time from Atwood's in Hutch, which I also included in the Upcoming Events listing.
Denise and I spent the day of June 1st at the Black Kettle show (click HERE for story and photos) and departed shortly after 2 for McPherson, and by a stroke of good fortune we ended up behind Jim Bontrager and his gorgeous '62 Corvette Roadster as we worked our way up Old 81. (We met Jim while at the car show and had a great visit!) Many thanks, amigo, for being such a good sport when we eased up on your left and snapped a few pix!
We landed at Three Rings Brewery about 2:30 and grabbed a primo spot in the "Corvette Corral." We had an extremely pleasant visit with musician Tom Pevear when he arrived (check out his music video below), and he graciously agreed to pose for a few pix with us and our Corvette. Thanks Tom, you rock!!!
As it turned out, only three Corvettes made the trip up from Hutch: Mike Lewis and friend Ann in Mike's white w/blue flames '80 Coupe, former CKCA president Kevin Brown in his '59 Roman Red Roadster, and Jim Gruver in his '16 Long Beach Red Z06 Coupe. We enjoyed a short siesta with them before needing to depart for Hutch (due to Denise's unusual w*rk schedule).
Between the Black Kettle Car Show and the Corvette Drive-In it'd already been a long, hot day but later, after tucking Denise in for the night, I motored downtown in our Corvette and discovered that Salt City Brewing was having a street dance that evening. Score! I proceeded to set up my lawn chair in the middle of Main Street and hang out for a couple of hours. The band hadn't yet started playing when I arrived, the venue was still pretty quiet, so I busied myself editing the day's photographs on my cell phone. However, as day-turned-into-dusk-turned-into-dark, I found myself surrounded by a sea of bumping, grinding, happy, dancing freespirits, enjoying the day's awesome afterglow as much as I was.
Denise and I got every single penny's worth out of this day off. As a wise philosopher once famously said: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
